oh, i love your shoes….

We are in a war.  How do I know?  Because the Bible says so. (Eph. 6:10-18)  But so far we have decided to wake up and put on our Belt of Truth, our Breastplate of Righteousness and now it’s time to put on our shoes.

Ahh…the shoes of peace.  Wouldn’t you love to own a pair of those?  The kind of peace that gives you a firm footing in life.  Regardless of how hard the enemy hits you…this kind of peace will hold you in place!  (I would like these in a ‘buy one get one’, please)

The Roman soldier’s shoes were not ordinary shoes.  They were made out of bronze or brass and had two parts: 1) the greave 2) the shoe itself.

The greave was a tube-like piece of bronze that began at the top of the knee and extended down past the lower leg, resting on the top of the foot.  It was made from a warped sheet of beautifully tooled metal that had been formed to fit around the calf of the Roman soldiers leg.  The shoe was made of two pieces of metal.  On the top and bottom, the foot was covered with pieces of brass. The sides of the shoe were held together by multiple pieces of leather.  On the bottom, were dangerous spikes that were one or more inches long.  And I thought that I had  KILLER SHOES!!

According to the Apostle Paul, “peace” is an awesome weapon, both defensive and offensive.  It not only protects you, but it also provides you with a ferocious weapon to wield against the enemy when he attacks.  Ephesians 6:15, “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace”.   If you use the weapon of peace correctly, it will keep spiritual foes where they belong.  UNDER YOUR FEET!!  One good kick from these bad boys and the enemy’s strategies will be crushed!!

We are in a battle against the dominion of thoughts and attitudes and we have to be prepared with inner peace that comes from God. In Jesus, we have that peace.  Ephesians 2:14, “He Himself is our peace.” So when we put on our shoes, we are arming ourselves with God’s peace.  And isn’t that we want the world to see?  When we find ourselves in a situation that is totally out of our control (I’m thinking sickness and everything else that is going on in our country here) we, as Christians, want the world to see the peace of Christ ruling our lives because we are to stand apart! How can we minister to others if we are fearful?

John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled, and neither let it be afraid.”

I want a pair of those shoes!!! I want to step out if faith without being moved by what I’m seeing or hearing.  I want to stick my spikes firmly into the ground and say, “I’m not moving until the work of God in this area of my life is finished.”

honey, have you seen my belt?

This post was originally written last year, but it is a favorite series of mine and I thought, since we do live in a troubled time…it is necessary to see it again…I will continue the series for the next few days..

God
is our Commander -in- Chief and has already won the war.  Yes, the Bible tells us that we are in a war and that we “wrestle”.

Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

When you picture someone ‘wrestling’ you think of a man pressing hard and straining their muscles to pin him to the ground.  And as a believer, that is what we are doing!  Satan is using all his energy trying to get us to be critical or to cause discord in our family and to destroy our testimony.  But we have to stand firm.  We can prepare and not be defeated.

Ephesians 6:13-17 (New International Version)

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The “belt of truth” is the first piece of weaponry that Paul has in our spiritual armor.  It seems odd because when we ladies describe what someone is wearing we don’t start with a ‘belt’!  We might notice shoes or a shirt or earrings but certainly not a belt.  But if you don’t have a belt, then it is much easier for your pants to fall off!  Your belt holds all things together! I imagine you wouldn’t have much confidence going somewhere if you are constantly trying to keep your pants pulled up.  (I’m picturing the kids ‘sagging’ right now)

The belt or girdle was used by the soldier as the place where he hung (or supported) his weapons.  He hung his sword or even his arrows from it.  And if he were a decorated soldier, he would pin his awards or medallions from his belt so people that saw him would know what sort of man they were dealing with.

But this is what the Belt did for the Roman soldier.  It held all the pieces of the armor together.  Even with all his great weaponry…if the belt wasn’t in place, everything would all fall apart.  The belt of truth is known as the knowledge of God, which resides in His Word.  To put on his belt of truth, you must know His Word.

We need to take advantage of every opportunity to learn about God and His Word so we can be armed against the enemy who is out to destroy us! Satan wants to keep us from walking in integrity so he will try to misinform us and upset us so that we will get bogged down in sin.  BUT, the way to deal with the Deceiver is to have God’s truth in our lives!  We have to ARM OURSELVES with the Truth!  We need to know what we know………

WE CANNOT WIN UNLESS WE ARE ARMED.  IT IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PUT ON OUR ARMOR EVERYDAY….IT IS OUR JOB.

Tomorrow we will put on our breastplate………

are we really in a war?

This post was originally written last year, but it is a favorite series of mine and I thought, since we do live in a troubled time…it is necessary to see it again…I will continue the series for the next few days..

Many christians aren’t even aware that there IS a spiritual war going on….but there is.  And we christians are the direct targets of the enemy.

Ephesians 6:11 tells us to “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”.  The word “wiles” means “strategy” or “plans of war”.  Satan has his eyes set on christians that are serving the Lord and is not after those who already belong to him.  And we live on Satan’s territory!  We’re not fighting on ‘neutral’ ground or even God’s ground.  This battle is in enemy territory and the world, the flesh and the devil are our common enemies.

And our enemies maneuver in order to entice us and cause weakness and failure in our lives…..so…if we are going to fight in this war, we better observe that there really is a war going on and how we are planning to fight it.

1 Peter 5:8 alerts us to “Be sober, be vigilant because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”  He wants to devour your life, your testimony and anything that could be used for God’s purpose.  A favorite trick of the devil is to make believers magnify his power to a greater degree than it deserves!  So we have to be careful not to imagine that the devil is behind everything that occurs, which could cause us to become paralyzed and keep us from usefulness in the Kingdom of God.

THANKFULLY, at the Cross, Jesus unraveled satan’s power over us! In Colossians 2:15, Paul clearly portrays Jesus’ victory and satan’s defeat!  It says, “And having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”  WOO HOO!!  It was not a quiet moment in Heaven!  Jesus made a display of these defeated enemies and it must have been quite a show!

But the fact still remains…as long as we seek to live in God’s will and obey His word for our lives, the devil will do his best to oppose and destroy the plan that God wants to accomplish through us.

FOR THAT REASON…HE HAS GIVEN US A SET OF SPIRITUAL ARMOR….and tomorrow we are going to put it on to “stand against the wiles of the devil”.

the devil made me do it…???

Ok…that is a disturbing photo…..

However…did you know that the majority of Christians do not believe that Satan is a real being or that the Holy Spirit is a living entity?  That’s right!!

“Six out of ten Americans reject the existence of Satan, indicating that the devil, or Satan, is merely a symbol of evil.” (the Barna Group)  Yikes!  Do these same christians believe in God’s Word?

The devil loves it when people refuse to believe in him.  That means he is totally camouflaged and covered by their lack of belief!  And that means that he can come in under the radar, totally undetected.  Satan is quite masterful  by hiding in religion, poetry, art and music.  He doesn’t usually come at us head-on.  No, he finds a back door, or a point of weakness.  He preys upon our thoughts and specializes in the things about which we are in denial.

I’ve done a post earlier about spiritual warfare and while it is a good subject, and keeps us familiar with his mode of operation, I think sometimes we can overemphasize him.  I don’t want to make anyone think of nothing BUT spiritual warfare.  However, Satan is real and he is a thief and he is a liar.….this I know.

Our view of spiritual warfare must begin with the basic understanding of Jesus’ (already accomplished) victory over Satan.

Colossians 2:15 “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the Cross.”

Paul is telling us that when Jesus Christ arose from the dead, He plundered the enemy!!!  And an even BETTER way of translating it is, He completely stripped principalities and powers and left them utterly naked, with no way to retaliate!  IN YO FACE, LUCIFIER!!! (sometimes, In Yo Face comes in really handy)

And the last part of that verse is even WAAAAY better….Jesus didn’t just plunder the devil, He totally rubbed the defeat in his face by throwing the BIGGEST PARTY the universe had ever seen!!!  Remember?  “He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” ?? When His resurrection was complete and the enemy was stripped, Jesus then proceeded to publicly display and expose the defeated spiritual enemy.  Wow.  That makes me think that I would rather have JESUS take care of retiliation….I would rather have JESUS get revenge for me.  He can do a waaaay better job for sure!!!

His victory is the basis for my understanding spiritual warfare, and I have to remember that so I can discern biblical doctrine and not get led astray.

So now that we know that Christ has TRIUMPHED….and we can pretty much figure out  that the Devil is….ticked. (Ticked  is such a timid word.  I wanted to use another one, but my dad reads this and he wouldn’t like it)  So….yep, he is TICKED OFF.

AND we know he is real John 8:44 says, “He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

We are in a battle everyday and Paul says that we are not  wrestling against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12) He is going to use people against you … people that will abuse you, misuse you and confuse you!  We have to be prepared …. (and I’ll say it again) ..yet not be so consumed with fighting him that we lose sight of the fact that we belong to the God almighty.  He is our Source, He is our Victor and He is our Protector and Deliverer.

I am urging everyone to re-read Ephesians 6:10-18 and daily put on the armor.  Specifically ask the Lord to send His angels to guard your family and protect each member of your family everyday.  Prayer is SOOOOO important and can be done anywhere at anytime.

God desires that we know Him better everyday.  Put yourself on God’s side….the WINNING side.  Ask Him to help you identify the devil’s tricks….and trust Him to do it!
