Ok, people…..the GMO story has just gotten bigger.  We HAVE to do something…….but what???

Remember the post I did warning about GMO’s (genetically modified organism) in the past?  You can find that HERE Then I did a little more sleuthing and wrote about it HERE.

“Eating genetically modified corn (GM corn) and consuming trace levels of  Monsanto‘s Roundup chemical fertilizer caused rats to develop horrifying tumorswidespread organ damage, and premature death. That’s the conclusion of a  shocking new study that looked at the long-term effects of consuming  Monsanto’s genetically modified corn.

The study has been deemed “the most  thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and  the herbicide Roundup on rats.” News of the horrifying findings is spreading  like wildfire across the internet, with even the mainstream media seemingly in  shock over the photos of rats with multiple grotesque tumors… tumors so large  the rats even had difficulty breathing in some cases. GMOs may be the new  thalidomide.

“Monsanto Roundup weedkiller and GM maize implicated in  ‘shocking’ new cancer study” wrote The Grocery, a popular UK publication.  (http://www.thegrocer.co.uk/topics/technology-and-supply-chain/monsant…)

It  reported, “Scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts,  developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage as early as  four months in males, and seven months for females.”

It  goes on to say: “The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as  severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and  20 percent in the control group.”

The study, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen, was the  first ever study to examine the long-term (lifetime) effects of eating GMOs.  You may find yourself thinking it is absolutely astonishing that no such studies  were ever conducted before GM corn was approved for widespread use by the USDA  and FDA, but such is the power of corporate lobbying and corporate  greed.
The study was published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology  Journal and was just presented at a news conference in London.

Findings from the study

Here are some of the shocking findings from the  study:
• Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature  death.
• Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally  allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large  tumors.
• Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe  organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.
• The study  fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that’s grown across  North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that’s  in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack  chips.
The Daily Mail is reporting on some of the reaction to the  findings:
France’s Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European  Parliament’s commission for agriculture and known as a fierce opponent of GM,  called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import  authorisations of GM crops. ‘This study finally shows we are right and that it  is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,’ he said in a  statement. ‘National and European food security agencies must carry out new  studies financed by public funding to guarantee healthy food for European  consumers.’

People, GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) are just not good.  They are not good for you and they are not good for me….and evidently not good for the animals tested because of pre-cancerous cell growth, damaged immune systems, smaller brains, livers, and testicles, partial atrophy or increased density of the liver, odd shaped cell nuclei and other unexplained anomalies, false pregnancies and higher death rates……..but other than that…………

In March 2001, the Center for Disease Control reported that food is responsible for twice the number of illnesses in the U.S. compared to estimates just seven years earlier. This increase roughly corresponds to the period when Americans have been eating GM food.

Our kids face the greatest risk from the potential dangers of GM foods for the same reasons they face the greatest risk from other hazards like pesticides and radiation, these include:

Young, fast-developing bodies are influenced most.

Children are more susceptible to allergies. 

Children are more susceptible to problems with milk.

Children are more susceptible to nutritional problems. 

Children are in danger from antibiotic resistant disease.

And get involved!  There is a group called Non-GMO Project created for consumers that believes that EVERYONE has a right to be informed about what they are eating.

The NON GMO Project scientifically tests all of the individual ingredients that make up a product using a third party testing facility. Products that have been certified are labeled with a NON GMO Project Verified label.

In the mean time, stick to whole organic foods that you can ensure are for the most part not modified like local and/or organic fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts. Skip the processed foods unless they are certified by the NON GMO Project.

Have you heard about these?  GMO means genetically modified organism. 

Genetic engineering is a radical new technology that forces genetic information across the protective species barrier in an unnatural way.  In other words, genes from one species are forced into the DNA of other species.  Remember when tobacco, asbestos and DDT were all declared safe?  Yeah, it’s kinda like that….

Bottom line?  GMO’s are NOT safe!!  Virtually all commercial GMO’s are engineered to withstand herbicides and insecticides.   A field can now be sprayed with chemicals and everything will die except for the resistant crop.

Graham Wynne, Chief Executive of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, says: “The ability to clear fields of all weeds using powerful herbicides which can be sprayed onto GM herbicide-resistant crops will result in farmlands devoid of wildlife and will spell disaster for millions of already declining birds and plants.”

There are also GM virus-resistant crops. Prof Joe Cummins says: “Probably the greatest threat from genetically altered crops is the insertion of modified virus and insect virus genes into crops – genetic recombination will create virulent new viruses from such constructions. The widely used cauliflower mosaic virus (present in the GM soy and maize currently on supermarket shelves in the UK) is a potentially dangerous gene. It is very similar to the Hepatitis B virus and related to HIV. Modified viruses could cause famine by destroying crops or cause human and animal diseases of tremendous power.”

Why be concerned? Well, other than that Hep B and HIV dealio,  one of many good reasons is that these laboratory-created mutations are unlabeled, virtually untested and on grocery shelves everywhere…..right now.

The problem with GM foods is their unpredictability. A person may prove unexpectedly allergic to a food he has previously eaten safely.  For this reason, people who are hyperallergenic or environmentally sensitive may want to avoid GM foods.  How do we know WHICH foods have GMO’s?  Don’t they have to label them or tell us?

Here’s the kicker….No!   The powerful biotech lobby has succeeded in keeping this information from all of us. In the absence of mandatory labeling, the Non-GMO Project was created to give consumers the informed choice they deserve.

If you get a chance, check out this film called The Future of Food.  I watched it on Hulu Plus last night and was appalled!!!  You can go to their website HERE and either watch it online (I hope you are not at work because it is lengthy) or you can download it or buy the DVD.  I had no idea what the big companies are doing to our farms.

With the increase in several diseases in America, it can be due to the profound changes in our diet!  Everyone eats…..everyone is affected.

So why GMO’s in the first place?

The promise:  highly productive crops feeding the starving millions, vegetables growing in the desert, vitamin fortified grains…

The facts:  none of these are available.  In fact the only two traits that are found in nearly all commercialized genetically modified plants are herbicides and/or pesticide production.  Soy, corn, cotton and canola plants are engineered with bacterial genes to survive deadly doses of herbicides.
