Lucuma? Here’s the sweet story…

image

First of all….did you even know there was a lucuma tree? With lucuma fruit? Well, you’re in for a sweet treat!

Apparently, Lucuma trees are native to the highland tropics of the Andes mountains in South America.  They are also the national fruit of Chile.  Side note: USA does NOT have a national fruit, but some individual states do.  You’re welcome.

And they’ve been around forEVER without my knowledge.  They are also called, ‘egg fruit’ since the fruit has a dry flesh (think hard boiled egg yolk texture).

So here we have a fruit with a dry flesh and a taste that is sort of maple syrupy and sweet potato rolled into one!  Some say it tastes like custard and a bit like pumpkin, but you will have to judge it for yourselves. You can purchase it HERE.

Benefits?  How about beta carotene, 14 trace elements, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus…to name a few!

So what do we do with it?  You can purchase lucuma powder and use it in baking cakes, cookies, pies and muffins. Lucuma powder can also be used to sweeten smoothies, yogurt, or just eat it raw!  There are so many possibilities!  It has a naturally sweet taste and does NOT increase your blood sugar levels!

gorgeous gogi berries….

goji-berries-vine

Pretty, huh?  The Tibetan School of Medicine has been growing this superfood for 2500 years!

But you don’t have to go to Tibet to try this little gem.  American gogi berries are grown mostly in the southwest deserts (AZ, CA, CO, UT, NM, TX) with a few grown in Mexico and South America.

These little beauts can really pack a punch!  They are known to:

  • boost immune function
  • increase alkalinity and vitality
  • protect your liver
  • improve your eyesight
  • improve your blood quality…..and more!

If you want to live for a loooong time, and actually feel good, then this superfood is for you.  It’s even been nicknamed “the longevity fruit” or even better, “little red diamonds“.    Enough said.  I’m in.

The gogi berry tastes kind of like a cherry and a cranberry got married and had wrinkled baby berries.  Be sure and look for organic berries that haven’t been sprayed with the pesticides that those of us in the ’60’s played in…..(if you are from the south you will remember the ‘mosquito’ trucks that drove around while we ran and played in the “mist”….sigh).

Gogi berries can be soaked and rehydrated in water that you can use for your base in your smoothie!  It’s easy!  Take about 1/2 cup of berries and soak in 3 cups of pure water.  Soak for about 2-4 hours.  Strain and add handful of berries and 1 cup of remaining gogi water, a tablespoon of agave syrup or honey and 1/4 – 1/2 tsp vanilla.  BLEND and dance.  You might want to add some cacao powder to the mix.  Feel free to mess around with the ingredients until you find the flavor you like best!

Gogi berries can also be added to cacao nibs, dried fruits, nuts and seeds to make a SUPER trail mix!  Have fun…but not just any fun….have a gogi day!

Bathing with the Gaithers, and other blessings…

Oh….stop it.  There wasn’t enough room IN the tub for all of us, so I just listened to them sing on my iPad, while I enjoyed my detox bath. (where is your mind, people?)

Yes, my morning was lovely.  I am so blessed.  I have a husband that works so very hard, so I don’t have to  (insert prayer request for him HERE)

So here is a little snippet of my perfect morning …..  It started around 6 ish, (why start earlier, hmm?)  I kissed my sweetie and shoo’ed him out the door,  grabbed my bible along with my notebook for some much needed quiet time.

I’m studying (for the 2nd time) Kelly Minter’s Lifeway study called, No Other God’s.  Have you seen it?  You can find it here and I HIGHLY recommend it!   I know that idol worship may seem like something from the Old Testament, but anything that takes a higher priority over God (read: job, hobby, Facebook, cell phone..eeek!) is considered an idol.  It is eye opening and you really should get this book.

So, back to the day.  I did my study for the day, had my prayer time and then decided it was time for a Juice!  I went in the garage to get Jack LaLanne…..ok, not the REAL Jack, but his fabulous juicer.  Easy to use and easy to clean!

Carrots, celery, apple and ginger……yummmmy.  Thankfully, when I get my produce home, I immediately grate, separate, chop and bag everything, and this makes it super easy to make a juice!

If I were really smart, I would place the apple, carrots, celery and piece of ginger into it’s own ziploc and label CARROT JUICE.  That’s what I would do if I were really smart……. (insert sound of crickets here)…………..maybe next time.

Once I had my sweet juice, I decided it would be a good time for my detox bath.  I grabbed my Epsom Salts, baking soda, grated ginger and The Gaithers, and headed for the bathroom.  I grew up with southern gospel music and enjoy it so much!  It’s right up there on the list of sweet tea and big hair!  It’s the perfect storm!!!

While the Gaithers were singing, I was relaxing and thanking God for my perfect morning.  He is so good and I am so very blessed!  What a great time and a privilege to thank Him for all my blessings!  This is my meditation!  I don’t need to ommmm…in a yoga class, I can speak directly to the creator of the universe!!  How powerful is that?

Never get so busy that you forget to spend time in His Word and in prayer.  You are denying yourself  the blessing of hearing His voice and feeling His presence.  He has provided everything you need for freedom of burdens, so  STOP.  LOOK. LISTEN.

And have the perfect beginning to a perfect day!!!
