miracle fruit? yes, please!

Synsepalum dulcificum……..yeah, it’s easier to call it Miracle Fruit.

This plant from West Africa has a berry that is completely organic, all natural, non-GMO and contains an active glycoprotein called miraculin. 

When you eat this little berry, the miraculin temporarily binds to your taste receptors (buds, I call ’em) to block the ability to taste sour flavors and even alters many other flavors in food like spicy, salty and bitter tastes!

The miraculin is considered to be a sugar substitute.  And this little berry, my friends, could change the way we look (and taste) our food!  Imagine…enjoying all kinds of ‘forbidden’ foods again!  It’s true!  Lemons taste like candyLimes taste like a sweet orange!  Can you imagine squeezing lemon juice into your coffee to sweeten it naturally?

WHERE CAN I GET IT?

If you are not going to wait and grow your own berries, then you can purchase it in a tablet form.  This is the most practical way because the berries are freeze dried and then formed into tablets, which give them a longer shelf life.  You can find them from www.mberry.us or even on Amazon HERE.  If you buy frozen berries, do not thaw them unless you are going to consume them right away.  Let them come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.  And if you get the whole berry, don’t eat the pit, of course.

Also keep in mind that the effects of the miracle berry last approximately 30 – 45 minutes and varies with each person.

Here is a simple recipe taken from the Miracle Berry Diet Cookbook that I highly recommend if you are going to try out this berry!

SWEET YOGURT PARFAIT

1 cup plain nonfat yogurt

1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/2 cup strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries

1/4 cup granola

Combine the yogurt and lemon juice.  In a tall glass, layer half each of the yogurt, berries and granola.  Repeat.

When you are ready to eat, let the miracle berry tablet dissolve on your tongue and then enjoy the dish!

We’ve talked about it before….GMO’s..

Here is Wikipedia’s definition of Genetically Modified Organisms…. “ A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, plants, fish, and mammals. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods, and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce useful goods other than food.”

It’s time to clean out the pantry folks and purge those frankenfoods!!

Why is this topic so maddening?  Well here are a couple of reasons cited by Ari LeVaux  at The Atlantic which was enough to creep me out and it’s only night past Halloween!

“Chinese researchers have found small pieces of rice ribonucleic acid (RNA) in the blood and organs of  humans who eat rice. The Nanjing University-based team showed that this  genetic material will bind to receptors in human liver cells and  influence the uptake of cholesterol from the blood.

The type of RNA in question is called microRNA (abbreviated to miRNA) due to its small size. MiRNAs have been studied extensively since their discovery ten years ago, and have been implicated as players in several human diseases including cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. They  usually function by turning down or shutting down certain genes. The  Chinese research provides the first in vivo example of ingested plant miRNA surviving digestion and influencing human cell function in this way.

Should the research survive scientific scrutiny — a serious hurdle — it  could prove a game changer in many fields. It would mean that we’re  eating not just vitamins, protein, and fuel, but gene regulators as  well.

That knowledge could  deepen our understanding of many fields, including cross-species  communication, co-evolution, and predator-prey relationships. It could  illuminate new mechanisms for some metabolic disorders and perhaps  explain how some herbal and modern medicines function.

This study had nothing to do with  genetically modified (GM) food, but it could have implications on that  front. The work shows a pathway by which new food products, such as GM  foods, could influence human health in previously unanticipated ways.

Monsanto’s website states, “There is no need for, or value in testing the safety of GM foods in  humans.” This viewpoint, while good for business, is built on an  understanding of genetics circa 1960. It follows what’s called the  “Central Dogma” of genetics, which postulates a one-way chain of command between DNA and the cells DNA governs.

The Central Dogma resembles the process of ordering a pizza. The DNA codes  for the kind of pizza it wants, and orders it. The RNA is the order  slip, which communicates the specifics of that pizza to the cook. The  finished and delivered pizza is analogous to the protein that DNA codes  for.

We’ve known for decades  that the Central Dogma, though basically correct, is overly simplistic.  For example: MiRNAs that don’t code for anything, pizza or otherwise,  travel within cells silencing genes that are being expressed. So while  one piece of DNA is ordering a pizza, it could also be bombarding the  pizzeria with RNA signals that can cancel the delivery of other pizzas  ordered by other bits of DNA.

Researchers have been using this phenomena to their advantage in the form of small, engineered RNA strands that are virtually identical to miRNA. In a  technique called RNA interference, or RNA knockdown, these small bits of RNA are used to turn off, or “knock down,” certain genes.

Humans and insects have a lot in common, genetically. If miRNA can in fact survive the gut then it’s entirely possible that miRNA intended to influence insect gene regulation could also affect humans.”

What can you do?  Well, California has it going on right now.  Prop 37  would make California the first state in the country to require that certain plant or animal products sold be labeled if its genetic material has been modified. The law would also make it illegal for food companies to label genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, as “natural.”  If approved, Proposition 37 would take effect in 2014.

We have a right to know and California is hoping to pass this proposition so other states can follow.  The passing of this prop could change the future of our food.

Just trust me….says the big corporations……..

Ok, people…..the GMO story has just gotten bigger.  We HAVE to do something…….but what???

“Eating genetically modified corn (GM corn) and consuming trace levels of  Monsanto‘s Roundup chemical fertilizer caused rats to develop horrifying tumorswidespread organ damage, and premature death. That’s the conclusion of a  shocking new study that looked at the long-term effects of consuming  Monsanto’s genetically modified corn.

The study has been deemed “the most  thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and  the herbicide Roundup on rats.” News of the horrifying findings is spreading  like wildfire across the internet, with even the mainstream media seemingly in  shock over the photos of rats with multiple grotesque tumors… tumors so large  the rats even had difficulty breathing in some cases. GMOs may be the new  thalidomide.

It  reported, “Scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts,  developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage as early as  four months in males, and seven months for females.”

It  goes on to say: “The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as  severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and  20 percent in the control group.”

The study, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen, was the  first ever study to examine the long-term (lifetime) effects of eating GMOs.  You may find yourself thinking it is absolutely astonishing that no such studies  were ever conducted before GM corn was approved for widespread use by the USDA  and FDA, but such is the power of corporate lobbying and corporate  greed.
The study was published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology  Journal and was just presented at a news conference in London.

Findings from the study

Here are some of the shocking findings from the  study:
• Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature  death.
• Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally  allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large  tumors.
• Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe  organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.
• The study  fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that’s grown across  North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that’s  in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack  chips.
The Daily Mail is reporting on some of the reaction to the  findings:
France’s Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European  Parliament’s commission for agriculture and known as a fierce opponent of GM,  called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import  authorisations of GM crops. ‘This study finally shows we are right and that it  is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,’ he said in a  statement. ‘National and European food security agencies must carry out new  studies financed by public funding to guarantee healthy food for European  consumers.’
