weekend motivation…or…death awaits me…

images  Started…..puff………running……….wheeze…..again.

A few of my friends on Facebook……you know who you are……….have started running.  And if I weren’t so RIDICULOUSLY competitive, I would have let it go.

But no.

There is no possible way I could read about their progress without thinking about my … laziness “For crying out loud!” my brain screamed..  “You live in the most beautiful city, with the most beautiful weather….no job, kids all grown…”

OK. OK!  OKAY!!!!!

So…I got out and ran.  And by the way, no, those are NOT my legs in the picture.  Mine are shorter and slower.

Here are a few of my running rules:

  1. I do not like to run with a partner
  2. I do not like to talk while running because I am listening to my wheeze and my faint heart beat
  3. I will not move out of your way because I could fall and die
  4. If it sounds like a scary old man is running behind you, it is probably me
  5. I never stop for potty breaks
  6. I turn beet red when I run because I am a non-sweater..er

I’ve have raced in a marathon in Paris, done countless half-marathons and the local 10 and 5K’s, but it’s has been a long time since these old legs were moving at a faster- than – walking speed.

So Thank you, Facebook friends for dragging my buns off the couch and back out into the streets.  But I swear, if I break a hip, I’m coming after you………slowly, but definitely coming after you…

dropping acid? acid vs alkaline foods…

Ahh…..ye old pH Scale…. so what is it?

The pH scale (p standing for potenz or power, and h standing for hydrogen) measures the level of acid vs alkaline.  The scale starts at 1 (which is the most acidic) and ends at 14 (which is the most alkaline).  Obviously the 7 is in the middle of the road and is neutral.

  • Who cares?  Well, apparently your body does.  Everything you eat or drink will have a pH above or below 7.  This means that your body has to work harder to maintain a proper blood pH.

Did you know that EVERY DISEASE KNOWN TO MAN can only exist in an acidic environment Yikes!  So you can safely assume that an acid/alkaline balance can affect a plethora of health concerns!

Most Americans on the standard American diet, are most likely to going to be too acidic (too low in pH) with a level below 7.  So even if you want to achieve or maintain healthy weight loss you need to UP your pH!  Go Alkaline!

  • How?  First you can request a ph blood test so you can see if you are low on the scale.  Dr. Robert O. Young has authored several books and has a very helpful website, http://www.phmiracleliving.com/.  He says it takes about 3 to 4 months for the body to recycle all its blood cells, so you get a whole slew of new blood cells every 3-4 months.  So a mere 12 weeks out of your life, you can jump on his pH program so you will be at the peak of health!

Here are a few of his recommendations:

  1. Hydrate
  2. Eat right
  3. Exercise
  4. Take proper supplements
  5. Take care of your heart, mind and soul
  6. Set goals
  7. Clean yourself from the inside out

It’s all about good choices….make the right ones and start living NOW!

arthritis and me….not a joint venture…

What exactly is arthritis?  It is the inflammation of one or more joints and it comes in a wide variety of forms.   Each kind of arthritis cause symptoms of pain, swelling, stiffness and the restriction of movement…and  I don’t like it one bit.

Wondering if your pain is related to arthritis?  Try this checklist via Arthritis.com:

  • Do you have pain in one or more joints?
  • Do you have swelling in one or more joints?
  • Do you have stiffness in your joints, especially after not moving for an extended period of time (e.g., moving in the morning)?
  • Do you have pain or discomfort in a joint that has a history of injury?

Not only are there different kinds of arthritis, but there are also different causes too!

  • Heredity
  • Age
  • Overuse of a joint
  • Injury
  • Infection
Most people that suffer from arthritis turn to expensive creams and prescriptions to deal with the pain, however, natural alternatives can make it easier to live with since there is no real cure.
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne peppers contain capsaicin, a chemical compound that relieves discomfort by blocking neurotransmitters that transmit pain sensations, says Balch in “Prescription for Nutritional Healing.” While cayenne is available as an oral supplement, it can be used topically. Mix cayenne powder with wintergreen oil to make a paste; apply it around affected joints. Cayenne powder can also be used in a poultice by adding enough warm water to make it into a paste. Spread the paste on a cloth and apply it to the joint.
Castor Oil Packs
Castor oil packs can be used to obtain relief from arthritis pain, says Balch. Place castor oil in a shallow pan. Dip a piece of cheesecloth into the oil, until it is saturated. Wrap the cloth around the painful joint. Cover it with plastic wrap so that the oil does not come off on clothes or furniture. Wrap a heating pad around the pad to keep it warm. Castor oil packs can be used for up to two hours at a time.
Low Impact Exercise
Low-impact exercise helps strengthen bones, reduce inflammation and slow the deterioration of joint tissue, says Balch. Choose exercises that do not place excessive stress on the joints. Swimming, bicycle riding, yoga, Tai chi and walking can all help reduce the pain caused by arthritis. Start out with 10 to 20 minutes of exercise at a time; gradually build up to 30 minutes. Exercise at least three times a week for optimal benefits.
Bottom line?  Eating the right foods, exercising and reducing stress are all good ways to limit the pain associated with arthritis.  Find a good doctor and start feeling better today!

cheaters never EVER win….

Ohhh…..don’t cheat around Michael.  In fact…do exactly as you are told or there will be consequences….

Remember we went to the italian restaurant?  Yeah…..that wasn’t so good…for me.  When I showed up for workout, I was told to immediately get on the treadmill.  This time we went all the way………..Yep.  15% incline, and 3.0 mph…..30 minutes.

So you are saying, “Well, 30 minutes isn’t too bad!”  And you are right.  Thirty minutes isn’t bad UNLESS you still have an hour workout ahead of you!!!!  My legs were BURNING!!!

And I love how he waits until all the other clients have left and then he looks at me and says, “Well, I hope you are ready!”

Eeeeeeeeekk!!  Help!  Somebody!!!!!

So, since I had burning legs and a childs attitude, we started off easy.  (Ok, HE says we started off easy)…

Let’s begin by swinging (or for my southern friends/family) swangin’ the kettlebell.  Oddly enough, he let me use the 10lbs and not the heavier ones.  Well, thank you, Mr. Trainer Man!

Wait for it……..it’s swangin’ back in front right about NOW!

See??  We did these forEVER, and then switched to lunges…..

I’m holding it in front of me like a cute little handbag……in fact, my cute little handbag weighs about the same….(note to self: clean out cute little handbag)

THEN he decides to grab the 2″, 40lb rope for me to swang…

My arms are already burning so I gave him the stink-eye.

In retrospect, maybe I shouldn’t have done that.  Because after I finished with that little exercise, he decided to take it up a notch….

Seriously, Mike???

Yes, seriously, Sandi.  So we did more of that and the stink-eye was gone.  Oh, my peeps, I can’t even remember all the things that he did to me…but the final kicker???

Normally this is NOT the angle that I would want anyone to see, but you have to understand what he did.

He turned the treadmill OFF, told me to put my chest to the bar and run……in other words, make the belt move……..and run FAST….

Sure, I did it…..about a zillion times, bouncing between that and the ARC………so, then there was this….

Yep…..almost heaved right then and there…….(I love that he took a picture of this…)  Later last night I was SOOOO hungry!!  I texted Mike and he told me that my metabolism was on FIRE!  (that’s a good thing)  “NO FOOD!” he said, and told me to get over it and go to sleep.  So I did.

So all in all, it was the hardest workout that I have ever done in my life….and I finished.

Getting closer to the goal………..

Exercise for people over 50….

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at
each side.
With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your
sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute,
and then relax.
Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.
Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can
lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more
than a full minute.  (I’m at this level.)
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.
 THANK YOU, REA !!!! 🙂

interesting research…

Did you know that Yoga and Drinking are somehow closely related??  Let me explain with pictures….(for those of you that need a visual)

Savasana: position of total relaxation

Balasana: position that brings sensation of peace and calm.

Setu Bandha Sarvangasana: this position calms the brain and heals tired legs..

Marjayasana: this position stimulates the midriff and spinal column…

Halasana: excellent for back pain and insomnia..

Salambhasana: great exercise to stimulate the lumbar area, legs and arms…

Ananda Balasanda: great for massaging the hip area…

Pigeon: tones the body, gives flexibility and gets rid of stress…

See, people?  Research MUST be good because of studies like this.  I guess I feel a little silly because I didn’t realize how closely related exercise and alcohol were……..I’m so dumb……
