history of fathers day…

Here is some interesting information on Father’s Day that you may not know! (via)

A brief history of Father’s Day: Believe it or not, it was a Mother’s day sermon in 1909 that prompted the founding of the modern Father’s Day. A young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd had been raised by her father after her mother died. When she attended the church that day in May she decided that Fathers needed to be celebrated too! So she held the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane Washington on June 19th of 1910.

President Calvin Coolidge designated the third Sunday in June as the annual celebration of Father’s Day in 1924. In 1972, President Richard Nixon made the observance a permanent national one.

So there you are.  Now  SHOUT OUT to MY dad….I love you and happy Father’s Day!!

FATHER’S DAY this year is on JUNE 16, 2013.

  1. Wow, so Father’s Day didn’t become a national holiday until Nixon? I assumed it was one of those things that had been going on forever! YOU, my sweet Sandi, are a WEALTH of fun facts 🙂

  2. This was so interesting…it’s only been a permanent observation since 1972? That surprised me…I should have remembered that. 🙂
