may I see your shield, please?

The war is still raging and we are still battling.  The difference is we are armed and ready for Satan’s attacks!  We have on our Belt of Truth, our Breastplate of Righteousness, our Shoes of Peace and now it’s time to pick up our Shield of Faith.  It’s big and it’s heavy, but pick it up, people. Pick it up.

Ephesians 6:16, “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”

Before we go any further, we have to notice that the shield and the belt are inseparably linked to each other.  The massive shield of the Roman soldier rested on a small clip attached to his loinbelt when it was not in use.

The loinbelt is represented by the Belt of Truth which is the Word of God and it is attached to the shield, which is represented by the Shield of Faith.  Soooo…..Your faith is attached to the Word of God!!  THEY ARE INSEPARABLE!!!   COOL!!

Without our shield to protect us, we are vulnerable to Satan’s attacks.   He knows what armor we have and where the empty places are between the pieces of armor.  He sees our “chinks”!!  And if we fail to give the Word of God a place of top priority in our lives, it is only a matter of time before our faith will begin to dwindle and Satan will have access to our lives.

The Roman soldiers had two kinds of shields.  One for public parades and ceremonies and one for battles. The shield for parades was small, round and very decorative.  It was beautiful, but too small to be used in a military battle.

The second kind of shield was the one for battle that was shaped like a door!  In other words, they were wide in width and long in length, just like the door of a house!  It completely covered the soldier!  Hmmm….how very interesting that the second shield is the one used as the illustration for the shield of faith.  God has given us enough faith to make certain we are completely covered, just like the Roman soldiers.  Our shield can effectively stop Satan’s arrows to help us win the war.

The choice is ours to make.  We can pick it up or lay it down.  In fact, if you feel like you have laid down your shield at some point along the way, if you’ve gotten discouraged and stopped believing God could work out your problems, it is NOT too late to pick it up!  So, pick up that shield and walk in faith again!!!
